Simple ways to be prepared for an emergency

You may think that you need to be a certified EMT or a medical professional to be prepared to handle a first aid emergency. We are here to tell you that this is not true! Anyone can follow these simple recommendations to be more prepared for an emergency.

Buy a first aid kit

A recent study concluded the 44% of adults don’t even own a first aid kit and that 48% lack even basic medical supplies in their home. By buying a first aid kit, even a very basic one, you are getting ahead of the curve when it comes to being more prepared for an emergency. You likely will not have time to buy a first aid kit once you actually need it, so you need to buy one before you need it. You can find great home first aid kits to get started here.

Learn CPR

CPR can quickly and easily save a life, and anyone can learn! It has been proven that administering CPR quickly to someone who may have had their heart stop or may have stopped breathing, will increase their survival odds. CPR courses are taught across the country, so find one in your city and get certified!

Learn the Heimlich Maneuver

The Heimlich Maneuver is used to save someone who is choking and can be administered by anyone who has a little basic knowledge. You can easily learn how to do the Heimlich for adults, children and infants in a few minutes and you can be ready if you see someone who is choking. A few minutes could save a life!

Have a plan (and talk about it with your family)

An emergency plan will help you to better prepared for an emergency. You should teach children what to do in the case of a fire at home, a car accident or other emergency. Having a plan is important, and practicing is even more important. Practice how to get out of the house, let the children know where the first aid kit and other emergency supplies are kept.

Following these basic steps will help you and your family to be prepared for an emergency when one arises. Everyone should be prepared, not just those who do it for a living.
