What are Ammonia Inhalants?
Ammonia Inhalants are used to treat fainting. Ammonia inhalants are also known as smelling salts. Inhalants are available in two forms: ampoules and in a tear-open foil pack. The inhalants are to be used as a respiratory stimulant for inhalation only. After the inhalant is opened, it is held near the nostrils; the fumes produce an involuntary reflex in the lungs that stimulates the respiratory system.Ammonia is a direct respiratory irritant. Once inhaled by the patient they reaction of the mucus membranes in the nasal cavity causes a violent avoidance response. This brings a victim back to consciousness in most cases.
Smelling salts, as ammonia inhalants are commonly known, use the compound ammonium carbonate mixed with water. Smelling salts have been in use since the time of the Roman Empire. During World War 2 the British Red Cross recommended having them in the first aid kits in every office, factory and workplace.
